Steve Lickteig would be graduating the next day and he had his whole life lying ahead of him. In a few weeks he’d leave the sleepy town of Kansas and become a Marine, so he wanted to make the most of the time he still had left with his family and friends.

Steve was part of a large family and had eight siblings, so he never really thought about the large age gap between him and his big sister, Joanie. His parents, Mary and Don Lickteig told him that they wanted another son and he never thought to question them.

He did think he could trust them to tell him the truth after all. If there was anyone he could trust with it, it would be the people who raised him. What he didn’t know was just how far those very people would go to protect those involved in the scandal.

Mary and Don did all they could to ensure that Steve would never found out what really happened- and to some extent they succeeded in hiding it from him. They didn’t know that all his life, Steve had an inexplicable feeling that something wasn’t right.

But when he reached adolescence, he convinced himself that the feeling was just teenage angst.

Yet, no matter how hard he tried to convince himself that it was the case, the feeling wouldn’t go away. Something just didn’t seem to add up.

Meanwhile, everyone in the community knew what his family was hiding. His friends, siblings, peers, and even his teachers knew the truth about Steve’s real father. Their whispers and gossip followed his every footstep, but the secret still managed to stay locked behind closed doors.
