Man Thinks He Found ‘Gold’ But Then Discovers It’s Something Out Of This World

Dave peers at the red rock in front of him while an eerie feeling creeps up his spine. Finally, after four years of waiting, he was about to get some answers!

It had been a long four years and all that Dave wanted was clarification about this strange rock he found four years ago. Could it be gold? Or could it be something different?

Scientist Dermot Hole walks into the room clutching a piece of paper. His face goes white and he looks at Dave; with worry and panic in his eyes. “You won’t believe this,” the scientist says before handing Dave the piece of paper.

There, right before his eyes, were Dave’s answers. And he soon learned that this “rock” was much more intriguing than any gold deposit could ever hope to be.

A Treasure Hunter

Dave Hole was no stranger to treasure hunting. In fact, he often spent his weekends armed with a fresh coffee, walking through Maryborough Regional Park while searching for something special hidden beneath the soil.

And there were a few times where he found some pretty good stuff! But then one day in 2015, he found something. Something that would change his life forever.

Finding The “Gold”

The New York Post

Walking underneath the towering trees while the sound of chirping birds echoes throughout the park, Dave saw something nestled underneath some twigs. He walks over and picks it up. When he does his mouth drops.

It was a rock but it wasn’t just any rock. It looked just like gold! Dave was lost for words! He knew he had to take it home.

Once back at his home, Dave got to work trying to break the “gold” apart. He tried everything he could think of, but the thing was incredibly sturdy! He even hit it with a sledgehammer, which failed to scratch its surface.

“Where did I go from here?” thought Dave before letting out a sigh.

Going To The Experts

Stumped, Dave stored the rock in his home for the next four years, planning on one day getting all the gold out of it. But it wasn’t until 2019 that he stuck it in his backpack and marched over to the Melbourne Museum for answers.

At the Melbourne Museum, Dave met geologist Dermot Henry, the person responsible for testing samples that people bring in to the museum. In particular, a large part of Dermot’s role involves examining possible meteorites to test their authenticity.

But this rock that Dave found couldn’t be a meteorite? Could it?

Time Was Running Out

Of course, testing the specimens was really more of a formality than anything — even after working at the museum for 37 years and testing thousands of samples, only two of those had ever turned out to be real meteorites!

But Dave had an eerily strange feeling about this rock. A feeling that had plagued him for the past four years. But Dave was running out of time and patience. He needed answers now.
