Man Learns Adopted Puppy Isn’t A Dog

Yang was making a trip to the forest like he’d been doing since he was a little boy. He knew every inch of it and all the best spots for picking mushrooms. That was when he came across the puppy, helpless and alone.

He tried to find its mother but realized they were alone. Its eyes were still closed as it yelped out for help. Yang decided to take it home, thinking it was a puppy. He was wrong.

Xinmin Yang lived with his family in a rural part of China. They were accustomed to a rustic lifestyle, and Yang spent a lot of time foraging food for them from the nearby forest. His family had lived there for generations, so he knew the place well.

He knew all the best places to pick berries, herbs, mushrooms, fruits, and other things that could be turned into delicious meals. The woods could, however, sometimes be a dangerous place too.

Yang’s father and grandfather had taught him how to navigate the forest safely and which parts to avoid altogether. Being accustomed to rural life, Yang’s family usually stayed far from the busy and sprawling cities.

The country might have grown immensely in an economic sense, but Yang and his family stuck to their simple lifestyle and traditions.

However, in recent years, it was becoming harder to avoid the bustle of big city life as it was now right on their doorstep.

Things Changed

Back in Yang’s childhood, the region was more like a village community. Many families of the same ilk lived there and thrived as they did.

In the last decade, more and more developments started to encroach into their home. Soon, large swathes of the woods were cut down to make room for buildings. Things just got worse from there.

Life became harder for the locals. With less forest land to live off, food grew more difficult to find. Many of the locals began to struggle. Their lives weren’t easy before but were almost impossible to sustain now.

People began leaving their droves. Yang was a stubborn old man by this time and refused to move his family out. It was clear that not many others shared his respect for tradition.
