Man Stuck Alone On Ship For 4 Years
In just a few months the whole ship had gone from shouting and full of people to quiet and completely empty.
He was the only one left and it felt like a prison. But even prison would have had other people to talk to. Had he known the document caused all of this he would never have signed his freedom away.
If he knew back then what the contract really meant, he never would have signed it.
Great Job
Mohammed Aisha was so happy when he got a job in 2017 with MV Aman.
He landed a job as a cargo ship’s chief officer. It paid well so he could give back to his family. As the ship departed his home country – Syria, he was in good spirits. But he had no idea what would happen.
Falling Apart
The first problem that would chain events of disaster together was some paperwork.
Abadiya in Egypt told them their certificates were out of date and that they couldn’t leave their port until they sorted the problem out. Then they found that their classification certificates had expired!
Every port would send documents that would grant ships permission to pass through, but these documents had to be valid. Theirs were not.
From Bad To Worse
Aisha was a senior worker on the ship. It was his and others’ responsivity to correct this mistake. They also noticed that the their safety report of equipment was expired.
Aisha was in disbelief. The owner was supposed to check this before they left the port. But things continued to get worse.
Stranded
The Egyptian government would not allow them to leave their waters until these issues were resolved.
Then the next problem started! Aisha was notified that not only was the company having financial issues but they didn’t have enough fuel to go any further and they wouldn’t pay for more. So people up and left.
