Fostering a dog can be difficult, but it’s even more difficult to let the dog get adopted by another family. Take for example this pup, initially named Tei and now called Toby. The puppy was found on the streets in South Korea, and after many kind people got involved, he and another pup were sent to the US to a foster home. Toby’s story is long and twisted, but he gets his happy ending with a family that loves him very much. Here’s how it all started…
20. Wandering Around
One day, an owner of an auto repair shop in South Korea found a pup wandering his shop. The dog seemed all alone as if he was abandoned. That’s when the owner of the shop decided to take the puppy to the local shelter.
19. It Was Very Cold
Unfortunately, the local shelter didn’t have enough room for all the kennels, so some of the dogs had to endure the freezing weather in the outdoor enclosures. Tei (Toby) was one of those pups, and he was sharing the kennel with Niro.
18. Band For Animal
The good news for these two pups was that Band For Animal took Tei and Niro to their rescue center and were flown to the U.S. where they found foster families that would care for them before they would get adopted.
17. Ann Hoang Decided To Foster Tei
Ann Hoang and her husband already have a dog. They thought of adopting a second dog, but they didn’t know if they could handle two, so Ann decided they could try fostering first, and if it went well, they could adopt a rescue dog. Then they met Toby!
16. A Scared Pup
Toby was a scared pup and not very sure about the people in his foster home. Ann saw that he was a bit anxious, not willing to get out of the crate. Once he would go out, he would stand and stare at his humans.
15. He Transformed
Toby was afraid to sit or lie down, maybe thinking it was dangerous, so he stood up, ready to run to his crate. The foster parents knew they had to be patient, so they let him do his thing until he learned to trust them. Then, they offered him love and attention, and he transformed in just a few hours!
14. Toby Loved His Foster Parents
As soon as Toby saw that he was safe, he started loving his foster parents and the home he lived in:
“At first, my husband was unsure of Toby because he was very timid and also this was our very first foster experience.” But things changed on the very first day!
13. Puppy Eyes
The first night, Toby made a leap of faith and sat down next to Ann’s husband and looked “up at him with his puppy dog eyes, and my husband saw the kindness of God in Toby's face.” That was when the two bonded!
12. Cuddles All Day Long
Once Toby gained confidence, his personality was revealed. He was a cuddler and a playful brat, running around with his dog sister Charlie. He fit perfectly with the family, but Toby was a foster, so Hoang knew how her husband would react if they gave up the dog if an adopter would come…
11. One Week
“It had only been one week but my husband and Toby were inseparable,” said Ann. They had two families scheduled to meet Toby, and she knew that her husband would be heartbroken without this adorable pup.
10. Adopting Toby
Ann said she “just realized how crushed my husband would be without him,” so she decided to adopt the pup and surprise him. But the surprise was so unexpected that made her and her husband cry tears of joy. What was her plan?
9. The Surprise
In an interview with the Dodo, Ann said that her husband has “never really asked for anything or wanted anything badly,” but losing Toby would have been unbearable, even if he’s been with them for a week.
That’s when she decided to surprise him in a special way…
8. What’s With the Card?
One day, his wife and a potential adopter entered the house to meet Toby. He had no idea that this was not what it seemed. The adopter handed the man a card, and he started reading it aloud, not knowing what to expect…
7. He Was Confused
For a few moments, the man was confused. He carried on reading and then started to fight back the tears. However, it was too difficult, so he just broke down, hugging Toby and kissing him, while also crying like a baby.
6. We All Cried
Everyone watching the moments captured on screen by his wife cried, so did everyone in that room. You can see Ann approaching the husband and hugging him and Toby, crying together. Then, we learn how she planned the surprise.
5. The Visit
Ann announced the rescue about her plan of adoption and they were on board. But they had to send someone to check the home and complete the adoption. The “potential adopter” was actually with the rescue!
4. She Didn’t Expect His Reaction
Hoang received the card from the “adopter,” and that’s when he got it. He was going to be Toby’s adopter, not that person. Ann then told Dodo that “but never in a million years did I think he would cry so much.”
3. Foster Fail
Ann then agreed that they didn’t expect to be “a foster fail for the first time around, but it was so meant to be.” Looking at how great Toby was with his crying father was even more tearful. When the man cried, Toby got closer for a hug!
2. A Loving Home
Thanks to so many people’s help, Toby found himself the perfect home with loving humans that would never want to be apart from him.

Niro is also living in a foster home, waiting for an adoptive family that will love him as much as the Hoangs love Toby. We are so glad this little guy got his happily ever after!
