A bright smile spread across her face as she walked into the manager’s office. Her forty-seven years of service were finally coming to an end.

In the meantime, she could only pray for the best when it came to the retirement plan she would receive from the company. She hoped her job would honor her in the right way as a grandmother with people still depending on her.

The reward they gave her broke her heart, however.

At the age of 20, Lashonda walked up to the doors of a KFC in Memphis, Tennessee, in search of employment.

1984 was the year of a young Lashonda, who was only interested in putting food on the table. Lashonda Deshawn Michaels was born the firstborn of six children.

Her life changed forever when her father was incarcerated shortly after she turned ten.

It wasn’t uncommon for Lashonda’s mom to have vices, though she was one of the sweetest women Lashonda knew.

The rest of Lashonda’s siblings were with her when she jumped from one husband to another. Despite the fact that she was abused or used for her money, these men did not matter to her.

As soon as they were too late, she seemed to be oblivious to their shortcomings.

Awful Evening

Lashonda remembers when she lost her mom. She was their only provider.

Her entire life lay ahead of her as she had just celebrated her twentieth birthday. A long night of quarreling between her mom and boyfriend ended in a spent bullet, which killed her mom.

There was no turning back now.
