Wisconsin-based artist Kaci Sullivan gave birth as both genders. His first child, Grayson, was born before Sullivan began transitioning. Phoenix, born Nov. 11, 2017, came after Sullivan’s transition.

The pregnancy occurred with Sullivan’s partner Steven when Sullivan briefly stopped taking male hormones for health reasons.

Sullivan runs the TransLiberation Art Coalition, an activist art collective that tackles issues of gender identity. Though he was born biologically female, he never felt right in his skin until he transitioned.

“I was always an anxious kid who felt intuitively disconnected from myself and in my dreams I was always a boy,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I felt like a ton of bricks had been lifted off my chest when I admitted it to myself.”
