New York is one of those great American crapshoot cities where your desire to walk alone at night can vary from block to block.

But who could say no to hardwood flooring and granite countertops in a space built like a dorm room, but for grown-ass adults?

Los Angeles, California

Unless, of course, you’d prefer the more industrial, hipster feel of concrete under your feet, along with the privilege of shared laundry. In which case sunny LA is the city for you.

Head a little further into the midwest and you’ll certainly stretch that dollar a bit more. Double the square footage, plenty of amenities, and the feel of a big city (if you’re into that sort of thing).

Houston, Texas
