The message was so confusing Maison stared at it repeatedly, unable to comprehend what it meant. He never thought that his mother would ever treat him in this way since he was always close to her.
In spite of his displeasure with what had happened, he felt that she had overreacted. He was at a loss. He’d never pictured him having to choose between the two most important people in his life.
A Good Son
Alma, Michigan, was where Maison Vallance grew up. His mother, in particular, had always instilled in him the need to uphold moral principles and had been very stern about it.
Unfortunately, this occasionally meant that Maison maintained a consistent “good boy” demeanor. Even though Maison didn’t always follow the rules, he made an effort not to let his mother down.
A Catch
When Maison reached adulthood, his chosen career path diverged from what he had anticipated. He received an excellent job offer from a big corporation right out of college.
He was eager and was aware that he could not refuse the offer. He experienced mixed feelings at the same moment. Even though the position was fantastic, there was a major catch: it was located near Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
A Promise
His mother was devoted to Maison. When Mrs. Vallance learned that he would soon be leaving the house, she was unable to control her emotions.
She supported Maison’s job and was happy for him, but she was also quite concerned about her kid. The parting was a painful one when the day finally came. Maison’s mother prompted him to promise her one thing before saying farewell.
Remembering His Roots
Even though Maison was now an adult, his mother would always think of him as her young son. It was hard for her to have him living so far away. Maison might become “affected by the world,” and Mrs. Vallance feared he might become lost.
She forced Maison to swear to her that he would always remember his foundations and be a “nice boy” in order to combat this. Maison carried the image of his mother’s face and words with him as he moved to his new house.
