The cat arrived just as it had all week, and as expected, it did not touch any dry food that had been put out in bowls like its counterparts. Instead, it hurried to the packaged food, biting into the plastic bag before bolting.

Philadelphia

When Amanda Kim was ten, she and her mother moved to Philadelphia. After spending her childhood in Lijiang, China, Kim was surprised by Philadelphia’s untamed, seemingly endless concrete jungle.

She embraced all the new things that being in America offered. She was having fun and taking advantage of everything the city offered, but there was a huge problem.

Struggling To Adjust

Amanda adored every aspect of her new life. Despite this, she was struggling to adjust to everything. Language barriers hindered her experience and nearly ruined her childhood.

Amanda spent the first few months of her time in Philadelphia alone. She’d spend her time with her mother because she was an only child. She had no idea how much these intimate moments with her mother would influence her future.

Interests

Amanda’s mother was a biology lecturer at a local university. Among her interests were cats, which she was sure she would pass down to Amanda.

By the time she was a teenager, Amanda had shared her mother’s love of biology and cats. Unsurprisingly, she decided to major in the subject when she started college. Her future was looking very promising.

Summer Break

Amanda was required to work at a local zoo, animal refuge, or shelter over the summer as part of her fieldwork for her sophomore year. What most people might see as a dark cloud over their sunny break from school was heaven for Amanda.

She and her mother had volunteered at animal shelters for most of her childhood, so she was eager to venture out independently. Unbeknownst to her, a cat would change her outlook on the world.
