Hey, have you heard of this rapper named Patches? Probably not, since he’s just an unsigned 13-year-old kid from New Hampshire. But you’re about to start hearing about him, since he totally destroyed the judges during his audition on America’s Got Talent. This kid’s got bars.
“What are you going to be doing for us?” Howie Mandel asks Patches after the kid takes the America’s Got Talent stage.
“I’m going to be doing an original song for you,” Patches answers, and just look at Simon Cowell’’s reaction to that piece of information:
Gee, it kind of seems like Cowell’s not expecting much from the New English tween in the tan suit. And Patches hasn’t even told them yet that he’s a rapper.
But wait. Because it gets even better.
“What’s your song about?” Mandel asks.
“My song is about the essence of performing,” Patches says. And you can almost feel everyone in the audience cringe. “This is going to be awful,” they’re all thinking.
But then Mandel tells Patches to go ahead. And then the beat drops.
And when Patches starts rapping, everyone’s jaws hit the floor.
Patches is the stage name of Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s Maddoc Johnson. And his appearance on AGT was a long time coming. Because his friend at school had been pushing him to go on television.
“A lot of people at (Portsmouth Middle School) were telling me that I should audition,” Patches said. “So one day I just thought, ‘You know, I might as well go for it,’ and then, you know, a couple of weeks later I got a call back.”
After setting fire to the AGT stage, Patches is bound to get some industry attention. And the kid rapper does it all with a simple philosophy. When asked to describe his style in five words are less, he said, “Enthusiastic, thought-out, and honest.”
