For some people, scavenging through thrift stores is a fulfilling hobby with the added bonus of stumbling across a fantastic deal. Treasures, clothing, and other trinkets can often be found at a small cost. Yet, you can’t help but ponder the history behind these vintage finds.

Shannon Hiramoto, a native of Kauai, spends the majority of her time scouring through thrift stores in search of a specific style of dress, namely vintage muumuus. Muumuus are found to be particularly flattering and loose-fitting.

Shannon explains, “My hobby is hunting for muumuus, specifically vintage ones.”

She was overwhelmed with joy when she stumbled upon an entire section of muumuus in a Salvation Army in Lihue. As she cheerfully started to pull them one by one from their hangers, something caught her attention that left her utterly baffled.

She was immediately overwhelmed by an unrelenting sense of familiarity when pulling out a dress from the large section. She racked her memory to find where she had seen something like it in the past.

She examined the odd length while holding it to her chin before turning her attention to the lovely frilled V-neck collar.

A flower pattern adorned the pink background of the dress. However, Shannon was about to uncover that there was a deeper story lying behind this dress.

More Than Meets The Eye

In an interview, Shannon explains, “I saw this stunning muumuu right here, and I found it entertaining that I managed to find a shorter one,”

Upon further inspection, Shannon’s intuition told her that this dress had more to it than what meets the surface.

When Shannon quickly glanced at the Liberty House label, she immediately noticed one word sprawled across it in faded permanent marker.

Before anyone else could notice her, she quickly snatched it up and hurried to the check-out counter with money grasped firmly in her hand. She had to uncover more.
