She tried to calm her children as they waited, but she was fuming now that she knew the hostess had lied to her. She couldn’t believe what she had heard.

The children were getting cranky because they were hungry. She was counting the seconds before it became chaos and desperately waved a passing waitress over. She had just started saying someone when Maddi, her youngest, screamed.

Birthday Steak

Kate Bradford adored her two children, but the single mother often struggled to find family-friendly restaurants. It felt like ages before she found a diner that would be perfect.

It was her father’s birthday, and she wanted to celebrate with him by taking him out for a steak dinner. She had called the Texas Roadhouse to book a booth for 6 PM, thankful that it wasn’t a far drive from where they stayed. She thought the night’s events would go smoothly.

Preparing Herself

Kate knew how nerve-wracking it was to take young children to a restaurant. She was overcome with anxiety as the time drew near.

She had encountered mothers who shared horrifying stories about diners who didn’t cater to children. The reviews often left her feeling bleak, but she had done tons of research to prepare herself.

But that may not have been enough…

Arriving Early

Kate had packed a bag with whatever she thought her three and 6-year-old would need. Despite having the diaper bag, puzzles, crayons, and toys at the ready, she still felt anxious.

She had left the house early so she could settle the kids in their seats 15 minutes before everyone else arrived. Kate was glad to see the diner wasn’t busy yet because Maddi and Cole were getting antsy. She wondered if she had made the right choice.

A Disappearing Smile

Kate was greeted by a smiling hostess but watched the smile disappear when she saw the kids. She had been tense all day and was waiting for a remark that would be the last straw for her. She was ready to put up a fuss if she needed to.

She reminded herself they were like anybody else and had the right to be there. Kate willed herself to smile and told the hostess she had made a reservation.
