If you thought getting an American passport was difficult and tedious get this — a woman was denied a Swiss passport because she is considered too annoying and it’s absolutely hilarious. I guess they just do things a little bit differently across the pond!
Nancy Holten, a 42-year-old woman had moved from the Netherlands to Sweden when she was 8-years-old and has two children who were born in the country, making them Swiss citizens. But trouble arose when Holten tried to get a passport for herself, as she was denied for being “too annoying” according to her neighbors.
How can you be considered “too annoying” to live in a country? Well, Holten is an animal rights activist and vegan who is very outspoken about her lifestyle. She took it so far as to try to have cowbells banned from her town because she thought they were cruel to the animals.
This didn’t sit well with the residents of her town, and therefore they were allowed to deny her citizenship. One of the reasons stated as to why she was denied was that she “doesn’t respect our traditions,” according to Tanja Suter, the president of the local Swiss People’s Party.
Her reasoning for the hatred of the cowbells? “The animals carry around five kilograms around their neck. It causes friction and burns to their skin.” Holten said.”The sound that cow bells make is a hundred decibel. It is comparable with a pneumatic drill. We also would not want such a thing hanging close to our ears?”
Well, Holten acknowledged that she may have been a bit too rigorous with her campaign against cowbells. “I think I spoke my mind too often, and I say it out too loud,” she said.
Will she ever get her passport? Who knows? We do know that she is probably the polar opposite of this man…
Hopefully she gets her citizenship figured out.
