The luxury hotel in Dubai is one of the tallest hotels in the world, but 39% of the total height of the building is currently non-occupiable space. The hotel was built on a man-made island which is connected to the mainland by a private bridge.
The Transamerica Pyramid no longer houses the company, but an outline of the skyscraper is still pictured in Transamerica’s logo. The building was designed by architect William Pereira after being commissioned by Transamerica’s CEO John R. Beckett.
The One World Trade Center was designed by architect David Childs and the skyscraper surpassed the Empire State Building to become the tallest structure in New York City. Its total height is 1,776 feet, which is a reference to the year that the U.S. Declaration of Independence was signed.
The Tower Bridge in London includes an exhibition where visitors can view the Victorian engine rooms in the bridge and access the high-level walkways and towers.
The Taipei 101’s elevators are capable of traveling 37 miles per hour and can transport passengers from the 5th floor to the 89th floor in 37 seconds. The structure was also made to withstand the earthquakes and tropical storms in the region.
The Shanghai Tower is located in the Pudong district of Shanghai and it was completed in September of 2014. The building incorporates many green architecture elements, including wind turbines that generate electricity, structures that capture rainwater, and a glass facade that reduced the amount of construction materials needed for the building.
The Willis Tower was completed in 1974 after four years of construction and when it was first completed, it surpassed the World Trade Center in New York City as the tallest building in the world. It held that title for 25 years and is still the third-tallest building in the United States.
The AT&T Building in Nashville is 617 feet tall and has 33 stories, making it the highest building in the entire state of Tennessee. It it currently used as an office building that can house 2,000 workers.
The Ryugyong Hotel in North Korea has 105 floors and is listed by Guinness World Records as the tallest unoccupied building in the world. Construction on the building was halted in 1992, but resumed in 2008 after 16 years of inactivity.
The Petronas Towers were opened in August of 1999 and they were for a time the tallest buildings in the world until they were surpassed by Taipei 101 in 2004.
Although the opera house is symbolic of Sydney, Australia, the Sydney Tower, aka the Big Poke, is also pretty popular. It’s 1,014 feet tall and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
Rockefeller Center is located in Midtown between 5th and 6th Avenue. And Top of the Rock is an observation deck that is 70 floors above the center and gives locals and tourists a great view of the city.
The 14,000-foot peak known as Mount Rainer is located 60 miles from the city center. But of course, it’s not the only impressive sight in Seattle. There’s also the famous Space Needle that’s 605 feet tall.
The church is known as Antoni Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia, which translates to The Sacred Family. To its left is the Torre Agbar, which Spanish King Juan Carlos opened in June 2005.
This snap proves just how much taller the Leaning Tower of Pisa is compared to the rest of the buildings in the city. Construction on the tower began in 1173 and took 200 years to complete. But shortly after its construction, it started to lean.
UAE’s Dubai has some impressive buildings like the Burj Khalifa, which is 2,717 feet tall and has 209 floors. Dubai’s second-tallest building is called Marina 101 and it is 1,394 feet tall.

One of the best places to enjoy the Boston skyline is from the city of Cambridge, which is located across the Charles River. The city is also known for being home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The hotel is part of old Quebec and was built near the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. In 1981, it was designated a National Historic Site, which is a pretty big deal for a hotel that only has 18 floors.
Diamond Head State Monument is located in Oahu and it is essentially a volcanic tuff cone overlooking Honolulu from high above. But to the locals, Diamond Head is known as Lēʻahi.
Although the Minneapolis city skyline might seem unique in its own right, it’s not. According to the city’s newspaper: “The Minneapolis skyline is unique, isn’t it? Well, not exactly. Many of the buildings in our city have relatives in other cities — sometimes distant cousins, sometimes siblings, sometimes twins.”
From the Kentucky town of Covington, travelers and locals can see the impressive skyline of its Ohio city neighbor. Among the various buildings is the Carew Tower, which is Cincinnati’s second-tallest building.
Seen from the top of the tallest building in New York City are two twin pools designed by an architect named Michael Arad. The pools serve as a beautiful but also tragic reminder of the day the twin towers fell.

The Fernsehturm or Berliner TV Tower is 1,207 feet tall and was completed in 1969. It is the 4th tallest tower in Europe and was once considered a symbol of East Berlin before Germany was eventually reunified.

The Height of Buildings Act of 1920 states: "No buildings shall be erected, altered, or raised in any manner as to exceed the height of 130 feet on a business street or avenue as the same is now or hereafter may be lawfully designated, except on the north side of Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st and 15th Streets Northwest, where an extreme height of 160 feet will be permitted."
Although Wilmington’s skyline isn’t widely popular, the various buildings in this area are home to several credit card companies. In 1981, Governor Pierre S. du Pont IV passed regulations that allowed credit card companies to charge more interest rates.
Atlanta is Georgia’s capital. It’s also the home of the 1023-foot-tall Bank of America Plaza. But Atlanta’s skyline also features the SunTrust Plaza which is smaller than BOA at 871-foot-tall, but taller than the Westin Peachtree Plaza, which is approximately 100 feet shorter.
Located at 520 Eighth Avenue, construction of the New York Times Building began in 2003 and ended in 2007. The cost of construction was approximately $800 million and inspired famous climber Alain Robert to climb the building in 2008.
The Gateway Arch is 630 feet tall, which makes it as tall as a building with 60 floors. It’s only 70 feet shorter than the MetLife building in New York City, too.
Despite Italy being known for its Renaissance architecture, there has been an explosion of modern-day architecture in the city of Milan, which includes a vast number of glass buildings seen in the background of this photo.
The Tokyo Tower is located in Japan’s capital city and was designed to look similar to the Eiffel Tower in France. The SkyTree building is even taller than the Tokyo Tower, but not as tall as Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
The 591-foot-tall Gherkin was built in 2004. But it’s not the only structure that has a weird name. The 72-story building known as the Shard was originally known as the London Bridge Tower.
The William Penn sculpture was installed in 1894 after being built in 14 separate locations. In 1894, the statue was the highest point in the historical city and it wasn’t until 1987 that another building surpassed the statue in height.
The top of the One America Plaza is shaped like the end of a Phillips head screwdriver, but it also has a similar appearance to Two Liberty Place in Philadelphia, which was designed by the same architect, Helmut Jahn.
The Commerzbank Tower is 56 stories and 850 feet tall and it is currently owned by Samsung. The antenna on top of the building actually gives the tower a total height of 985 feet. The Tower was surpassed as the tallest building in Europe by the Triumph-Palace in Moscow.
The Luxor Sky Beam is visible from hundreds of miles away and it is the strongest beam of light in the world. To create the beam, curved mirrors collect the light from 39 xenon lamps. The lamp room in the building can reach temperatures of 300 degrees Fahrenheit while the lights are operating.
Coit Tower is a 210-foot tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Fransisco. The tower was built between 1932 and 1933 after Lillie Hitchcock Coit left one-third of her estate to beautify the city.
The Wells Fargo Center in Jacksonville is the city’s second-tallest building. It was completed in 1974 and was first known as the Independent Life Building, because it was funded by the Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company.
