Meredith Grey was just a girl at the bar whom Doctor Derek Shepherd took an interest in. Shortly after striking up a conversation, he and Meredith went to her place to get to know each other and the rest is history.
Although viewers fell in love with Meredith and Derek’s initial love story, they also rooted for Doctor Yang and Doctor Burke’s romantic, albeit rocky, relationship that started with flirtation and later became more.
In the final moments of the season one finale, a mysterious red head walks up to Derek and Meredith and introducers herself as Addison, Derek’s wife. And what was even more shocking was that she announced that she knew that Meredith was the other woman.
Ellis Grey, played primarily by Kate Burton, was once a doctor at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital where her daughter, Meredith, eventually went to do her internship.
Although Meredith developed strong friendships over the years, she will always remember the friends she made during her internship— George, Izzie, Alex, and Cristina.
Meredith’s mother, Ellis had an on-going love affair with Doctor Richard Webber, who was married to Adele Webber. Of course, Ellis, was still married to Meredith’s father, Thatcher Grey at the time.
Mark Sloan was one of Derek Shepherd’s best friends in New York. They were practically brothers until Mark slept with Addison Montgomery and ruined their marriage.
Although Ellis had begged him to leave his wife so he could be with her, Richard Webber ultimately chose to stay with Adele. So, a heartbroken Ellis packed her bags and left for Chicago with her daughter Meredith in tow.
Chris O’Donnell not only played vet Finn Dandridge, but he was also Meredith’s rebound after Derek chose to work on his marriage with Addison. Eventually, Meredith realized her heart belonged to Derek and she dumped Finn.
Mark Sloan was the subject of many arguments between Derek and Addison. Eventually, Sloan walked back into their lives, which resulted in more tension for the married couple.
The actress won an Emmy for her recurring role as Adele, who was Richard Webber’s wife. Her character knew Addison and Derek and she was often seen judging Derek for continuing to flirt with Meredith Grey.
Miranda Bailey is a general surgeon and she was initially the interns’ worst nightmare. But she eventually proved to be a worthy mentor and friend to Meredith and the interns. Meanwhile, Webber was Bailey’s supervisor, but he also mentored the interns, particularly Meredith, whom he felt responsible for after tearing her family apart.
In the pilot episode, viewers saw Meredith visiting her mother, Ellis, at an institution. It turns out that after years of being an award-winning doctor, Ellis developed Alzheimer’s and couldn’t even recognize her daughter anymore.
When Meredith's Alzheimer’s stricken mother, Ellis, continued to share bits and pieces of her past, Meredith realized that Richard and Ellis had been together and it was their relationship that caused her father, Thatcher, to abandon his family.
Thatcher Grey’s second wife tried to reach out to Meredith to become a surrogate mother to her, but Meredith initially rejected her. But after seeing how harshly Meredith was judging Thatcher, Susan came clean that she was the one that encouraged her husband to leave her be, resulting in a 20-year estrangement.
Susan Grey died during surgery to treat a series of hiccups. When Meredith went to tell her estranged father Thatcher what happened, he slapped her.
George O’Malley fell in love with Doctor Callie Torres in season 2 and the two of them eventually got married. But O’Malley wasn’t actually in love with Torres. He was secretly in love with Izzie Stevens.
Denny was a patient in desperate need of a heart transplant. He was also quite smitten by Doctor Izzie Stevens, whom he flirted with all the time. Eventually, the two of them fell in love.
To get him a heart that had just become available, Izzie had to cut Denny’s LVAD wire, a device designed to help his heart pump blood. This put his life at risk which bumped him up on the transplant list but nearly ended her career.
Despite receiving a heart transplant, Denny suffered from a blood clot which killed him. And when Izzie went up to see him, she discovered that he had already died. So, she rested next to him and cried.
Izzie took a break while she was being investigated for cutting Denny’s LVAD wire. But at that point, Izzie was so grief-stricken over losing the love of her life that she simply quit. Spoiler alert: She came back!
George O’Malley confessed how he felt about Izzie, and although she was still pining over the loss of Denny Duquette, she eventually realized she had feelings, too. But after they slept together, they started having doubts and felt guilty over what they had done to O’Malley’s wife, Callie.
But only after Callie forced George to tell her. She already had her suspicions that her husband was having an affair. At the time, she was going through a rough patch at the hospital, so she asked him to hold off telling her. Eventually, the truth came out and the two of them divorced.
Doctor Erica Hahn kissed Callie to make Doctor Sloan jealous. But the kiss was like a key that unlocked something within Callie and she soon started experimenting romantically with women.
Doctor Hahn lost out on a heart for a patient. That heart had gone to Denny Duquette after Izzie cut his LVAD wire. When Hahn realized that the hospital had covered up what happened, Callie asked Hahn not to report Izzie. This resulted in the breakup and Hahn quitting the hospital.
Doctor Robbins was the pediatric surgeon. She and Callie had an on and off relationship at first stemming from Callie’s desire to have kids and Arizona not wanting to. But the two of them eventually recognized they were meant for each other.
During a brief separation, Callie slept with Doctor Mark Sloan. This resulted in her getting pregnant. When Arizona came back into Callie’s life, she had to accept that the woman she loved was having Mark’s baby.
They unofficially married in season 5, episode 24 with a post-it note. But they didn’t officially marry until season 7, episode 20, when they went to city hall.
Izzie loved Denny so much that she accepted the fact that he had returned to her. But eventually, it was revealed that she was only seeing him because she had a brain tumor that nearly killed her. Fortunately, Doctor Shepherd was able to remove it.
George O’Malley did fail his boards the first time but passed the second time around. He later joined the army and was prepared to leave, but he jumped in front of a bus to save a young woman’s life. He was critically injured and later died.
A pregnant Callie was critically injured in a car accident moments after Arizona had proposed to her. Over the course of the episode, many of the main characters are seeing singing, including an out of body version of Callie singing to herself.
Lexie was crushed by debris when the plane carrying her, Derek, Meredith, Cristina, Mark and Arizona crashed. Her injuries were too severe, and she died. Mark was rescued along with the others, but he died from his injuries at the hospital. The hospital was later renamed Grey Sloan Memorial in their honor.
Technically, Meredith has three half-sisters. Two are from her father’s side. One is named Molly, who was only seen in the series briefly. The other was Lexie Grey, but she passed away. However, in season 11, Meredith discovered that her mother had given birth to a daughter named Maggie, whom she gave away shortly after birth.
Amelia Shepherd is Derek’s sister. She struggled with controlled substance abuse for many years and also suffered from a brain tumor. She had a brief relationship with Doctor Owen Hunt but eventually moved on to another doctor named Atticus “Link” Lincoln.
On the day of her death, Ellis was at the hospital and was acting very agitated. So, she was given lorazepam to calm her nerves. Unfortunately, her heart stopped and the doctors were unable to resuscitate her.
Gary Clark blamed Derek Shepherd for his wife’s death. So he went into the hospital, shot and killed a few people and then finally aimed the gun at Shepherd. Fortunately, Shepherd survived, but in the stress, Meredith, who was pregnant at the time, miscarried.
Sandra Oh played Doctor Cristina Yang and Meredith Grey’s best friend for 10 seasons before leaving the series. Her character went to Switzerland to become the director of cardiothoracic surgery.
Doctor Yang’s former fiancee, Doctor Preston Burke, played by Isaiah Washington, returned to “Grey’s Anatomy” to offer his former squeeze his job so he could spend some more time with his wife and kids.
Derek was making a three-point turn in the middle of the road when a truck came out of nowhere and struck his car. He was taken to the hospital, but was declared brain dead.
She and Derek adopted a daughter named Zola. Then they had a biological son named Bailey. And then she got pregnant with a daughter that she named Ellis after her mother. She had gotten pregnant with Ellis shortly before Derek died.
Despite being an intern and much younger than her, Meredith reluctantly started a relationship with Doctor Andrew Deluca. But they had a few hiccups in their relationship.
Meredith committed insurance fraud so that an uninsured little girl could receive proper medical treatment. But Deluca took the blame and went to jail. Eventually, Meredith confessed and Deluca was released.
Thatcher Grey was dying of cancer and was in hospice. At Richard Webber’s suggestion, Meredith decided to pay him a visit. They caught up. He explained that he was at Derek’s funeral but didn’t want to bother her. They eventually made amends and then he passed away.
Although Alex had recently married Jo Wilson, he learned that his ex-wife, Izzie Stevens, had used their fertilized eggs from season 5 to have twins Alexis and Eli. So, he dumped Jo in a letter and went to live with Izzie and the kids.
In what became a season long arc, Meredith fell into a coma after succumbing to the effects of the pandemic. Although she was able to fight the disease, it took the doctors a while to figure out why she wouldn’t wake up.
While Meredith was between life and death, she experienced a dream where she was standing on a beach. And she wasn’t alone. Several long gone characters appeared to her, including her beloved husband, Derek.
Meredith’s sister Lexie showed up shortly after Mark Sloan did to say hi to Meredith at the beach to let her know what they had been up to in the hereafter since they passed away.
After Derek, George was the second character to appear at the beach. One of the first things Meredith noticed was that George had aged. And he claimed he looked older because he was a part of her mind so she saw him that way.
Andrew Deluca was mortally wounded trying to stop a child trafficker. He died at the hospital, but his soul ran into Meredith at the beach. They had a moment where they said goodbye before Deluca was greeted by his deceased mother and crossed over.
Maggie, who is Richard Webber and Ellis Grey’s biological daughter, and Meredith’s half-sister, married Doctor Winston Ndugu in the season 17 finale. Meredith, who had fully recovered, was in attendance along with the other doctors.
