Buffalo Bills wide receiver Zay Jones was arrested on Tuesday night following a bizarre incident involving his brother Cayleb Jones, a Los Angeles apartment building, a whole lot of blood, and nudity.
“I’m going to fight for Jesus,” a man, presumably Zay Jones, says off camera in a video of the scene released by TMZ. Then Jones, completely naked, runs past his brother and a woman, who screams loudly.
The video then reveals a bloody mess left behind in the apartment building’s hallway.
According to TMZ, Cayleb Jones, on a futures contract with the Minnesota Vikings, was trying to keep his brother from jumping out of a window on the 30th floor. Zay Jones entered a public balcony area, where he smashed his foot through a window. Police arrived and arrested the 22-year-old on a charge of felony vandalism. Law enforcement indicated Jones was being held in the medical ward of LA County Jail, with bail set at $20,000.
“We are aware of the incident involving Zay Jones,” the Bills said in a statement on Tuesday night. “We are still in the process of gathering more information on the matter. At this point, we will have no further comment.”
Before Buffalo made Jones a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, scouts praised his mental fortitude as much as they did his abilities on the field.
From NewYorkUpstate.com in 2017:
ECU’s director of player development [Brian Overton] always travels with his school’s prospects during the pre-draft circuit, and never was a player more prepared — physically, mentally and emotionally — than Zay was. The problem is, scouts and coaches kept asking a question he couldn’t answer.
“Coach, c’mon now,” they said. “This is too good to be true. I want something wrong with him. I have to be able to go in there and say he has this flaw.”
“I by no means pegged him as a perfect guy,” Overton said. “I never did that. But I did not shy away from saying this is as close to what you want as you’re going to get.”
One NFL scout said Zay was as impressive an interview as any prospect he’s come across.
Here’s to hoping Zay is okay.
