The Cleveland Browns have reached new depths of embarrassment.

During a season in which they’ve watched two quarterbacks that they’d passed on in the last two NFL drafts break out, the Browns thought they’d completed a trade for Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback A.J. McCarron.

They even celebrated it … right up until they realized they’d forgotten to let the league know before the 4 p.m. deadline.

This according to ESPN Cleveland reporter Tony Grossi.

The Bengals called the trade in at 3:55 p.m., but the Browns’ call arrived after the deadline. Despite protests from the organization, the league denied the late trade.

The jokes practically write themselves.

Somehow, it gets even worse. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the deal in place would have sent a second-rounder and a third-rounder to the Bengals for McCarron.

Jimmy Garoppolo, considered by most to be a superior starting prospect to the Bengals backup, went for just a second-rounder hours earlier.
