Stephen Curry is the Carolina Panthers' most famous fan.

The Golden State Warriors point guard spent much of his childhood in North Carolina, and as result rocks Panthers gear all the time and even got to bang the "Keep Pounding" drum before a game last NFL season.

In turn, Curry's a big fan of quarterback Cam Newton.

“Just to see him and his mindset this year especially,” Curry said of Cam in February, “where he’s taken his game and what he focuses on the team, and winning and having fun…I’d like to say I saw it when it was just getting started.”

The two consider themselves friends, and Newton's a fan of the two-time MVP as well.

"Steph Curry is special," Newton said. "He does things you only see on video games. He is transcending the game upwardly. He's not only giving opportunities to people who can really shoot, but also to undersized guys. You've got to respect that."

Special, but not the best.

According to Newton, that mantel still belongs to LeBron James, whose Cleveland Cavaliers are battling the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

“A person asked me, 'Well, is Steph Curry the best basketball player on the planet?'" Newton told "The Mac Attack" show on WFNZ-AM. "I said, 'No.' I said, 'Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the best team on the planet.'

“I still think LeBron is [the best player]. He’s 6-7, athletic, can do anything on the court. But LeBron is not on the best team. Going back to what I was saying, the power of team will always be better than the power of skill."

Awkward.
