A year after he became the world’s most famous sculptor for the wrong reason — the creation of a Cristiano Ronaldo bust so inaccurate it became a meme — Emanuel Santos tried again.

And it’s much better! The superstar Real Madrid forward’s eyes are on the same planet and everything.

Bleacher Report commissioned the do-over, and made a documentary about it, directed by Kelly Naqui. In the doc, Santos admitted that he’d never attempted to sculpt a bust before his initial crack at forming Ronaldo’s head — which was unveiled at Madeira Airport in Portugal on March 29, 2017, when the airport was renamed after the Madeira-born soccer player.

“I like challenges,” he explained. Both Santos and his wife broke down in tears while discussing the backlash over the first statue.

Still, Santos said he’s proud of his initial effort.

“The first Ronaldo bust, if I hadn’t done it the way I did, it would’ve already been forgotten a long time ago,” he said. “So, sometimes it’s necessary to have a certain bravery to go against the usual and have an impact. Because even though there are people who mock and make negative comments, there are still many people who value it.”
