Joel Embiid’s recovery from surgery to repair a broken face coincided with his alma mater’s first trip to the Final Four since 2012.

Unfortunately for the Philadelphia 76ers’ star center, his Kansas Jayhawks‘ thrashing at the paws of the Villanova Wildcats only induced more pain.

There was almost nothing Kansas, who featured Embiid in his lone college season in 2013-14, could do: The Wildcats, who lead the nation in three-pointers made, hit 10 shots from deep (on 18 attempts) before the Jayhawks, the nation’s second-leading three-point-shooting team, even attempted one.

High on painkillers (we think), Embiid went from excited during Michigan’s win over Loyola-Chicago in the game prior to dejected.

By halftime, Villanova had tied the record for three-pointers made in a Final Four game, and ultimately set the new record at 18 makes in their 95-79 win.

After the loss, Embiid was still so high he went and asked out the girl he’d already curved on live TV due to her prior rejection of him: Rihanna.
