While overseas for UCLA’s season opener against Georgia Tech, LiAngelo Ball was arrested in China for shoplifting along with two of his teammates, freshman forward Cody Riley and freshman forward Jalen Hill.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, the three were arrested for allegedly stealing items from a Louis Vuitton store located near the team’s hotel. Details are still coming in regarding the incident, but what is known is the three freshmen were taken into custody before being questioned by Chinese authorities.
UCLA released a statement regarding the incident: “We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China. The University is cooperating fully with local authorities on this matter, and we have no further comment at this time.”
According to the report, the police were not playing around with their investigation, as they came into the hotel and questioned players from both teams. Georgia Tech also released a statement regarding the matter.
“During the questioning, it was determined that Georgia Tech student-athletes were not involved in the activities being investigated,” the statement reads. “They have resumed their scheduled activities in advance of Saturday’s season opener versus UCLA in Shanghai.”
