Matt Ryan Gets Picked Off by His Offensive Coordinator at Training Camp

The road to victory is going to be a long one for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

After starting the 2015 season with an impressive 6-1 record, the Falcons only won two more games thanks, in part, to a tremendous decline in offensive production. Ryan’s best statistical season quickly turned into his worst, as the eight-year veteran finished with 16 interceptions, mostly from the final nine games of the season.

Matty Ice is trying to get out of his interception funk with the help of new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, but it’s proving difficult so far. In fact, Shanahan himself actually picked off Ryan during practice on Thursday.

I think rookie tight end Austin Hooper was supposed to cut in front of Shanahan, so that play can’t be blamed entirely on Ryan. But nobody likes to see the coach trump the star quarterback on any physical play.

It’s highly unlikely Ryan is at risk of losing his job. It’s simply a matter of getting on the same page. Having Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman and a revamped offensive line should be enough. Pro Football Focus ranks that O-line fourth overall, despite finishing 26th last season.

The pieces are in place, Ryan. No more mistakes!
