Odell Beckham has the richest shoe contract in NFL history.
“Odell should be the highest-paid player ever in the National Football League,” Miller told reporters on Wednesday. “He should be the highest-paid player ever, regardless of position. That’s just the type of player he is. It doesn’t matter if it’s quarterback, offensive line, receiver. It doesn’t matter. The type of impact that he has on the globe, the type of viewers that he brings—just him as a player. That makes up for him not playing quarterback. So, he’s a once-in-a-lifetime player. Definitely deserving.”
This summer, Beckham said that becoming the league’s highest-paid players was “just one of” his aspirations.
The team has picked up the fifth-year option on his contract for 2018. After that he’d become a free agent if the sides don’t come to an extension agreement.
“Probably every player would like to be the highest-paid player in the game. I’m not going to lose any sleep over that,” Giants co-owner John Mara said in July. “We’ll get the contract done at the appropriate time. Sooner rather than later, but there’s no time table on it. There’s no reason for us to rush into it.”
Mara added that “quarterback is always going to be the highest-paid player.”
Last year, Miller signed his own record-breaking contract. His $70 million in guaranteed money is the most ever for a defensive player.
And he might not be wrong about Beckham. The wideout helped the Giants to an 11-5 record in 2016, hauling in more than a third of the team’s receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. This year, he missed the team’s first game and was visibly hobbled in his four appearances before succumbing to another injury. The team is 0-5.
Despite his being limited, the LSU alum accumulated 302 yards and three scores in four games.
Beckham’s injuries might hurt him in negotiations, but Miller, the receiver’s close friend, doesn’t think the Giants should fret over his ankle.
“There’s no reason that he won’t come back and be the same type of player. That’s just one of the guys that you invest in. When you get a guy like that, that’s the guy that you invest in, that you want to keep around for his whole career.”
