It feels like he’s suspended all the time. Most players in the league think he plays dirty. He’s one of the most notorious linebackers of the decade. And he has a theory as to why he gets so many flags. Vontaze Burfict thinks NFL refs are conspiring against him.
The Cincinnati Bengals bad boy has a major (and probably not too far off) gripe about the league’s officiating. He believes the referees are starting to target him because of his infamous fouls and the reputation he has received.
Burfict told ESPN that one of his biggest issues is the fact he can’t react to anything the refs do. Because he can defend himself against players, but once a ref gets in his face or touches him, he can’t do anything about it.
“The refs, they come up to me, talking to me disrespectfully, wanting me to curse back at them, but me cursing back at them isn’t going to help me,” he said in the interview. “I’m not going to get a flag in my favor next time around, but that’s the way they handle business, I guess. I told Coach I’m just going to try to stay out of the refs’ way.”
Does Burfict have a point? Or do you think he earned his reputation with his notorious play on the field?
