The stakes are a little higher in the original story. Along with the fam vs man dilemma, the Lil’ Mergirl is also choosing between 300 years of mer-living but an afterlife as seafoam OR a short life as a human and ETERNAL HEAVENLY BLISS. But wait, no eternal heavenly bliss for her unless the prince falls in love with her. If he marries someone else it’s all seafoam all the time. Long story short, the prince doesn’t fall in love with her (but he definitely still wants them to be friends) and TLM’s sisters try to convince her to kill him and his actual bride in their sleep. I swear they all live happily ever after.
