Hades

Ed is similar to the Greek god Hades, lord of the Underworld, also known as Pluto to the Romans. As he constantly points out to Maddie, he’s very reliable, dependable, consistent. He’s the epitome of stasis and stability, rather like the afterlife in the Land of the Dead. And if Nathan represents Zeus, it would make sense that he and Ed would fight, as Hades and his golden brother were often in conflict. Ed’s dark hair and beard also serve to connect him with the violet-black Hades, the concept of death being artistically depicted by the end of the visible color spectrum.
