Because John Phillips was perfecting the recording process at his home in Bel-Air, recording sessions were taking much longer than expected. So, Cass Elliot took some time to record solo songs, one of which was credited to “Mama Cass with the Mamas and the Papas,” which caused some bad blood among the group.
