Built in 1882 by King Kalakau, the last king of Hawaii, the Iolani Palace was taken over by his sister, Queen Lili’uokalani after his death in 1891. Two years later, the government took control of the palace and held the queen prisoner in her home. And today, visitors who go to the palace-turned-museum, swear they hear chanting and music in the room where her royal highness was held prisoner.
