Mattel partnered with Oreo cookies to create the Oreo Fun Barbie. But when they released the African-American version of the doll, people were outraged because “Oreo” is sometimes used as a derogatory slang term for a black person who “acts white.” The doll didn’t sell well, and Mattel recalled the unsold stock, making it a rare collector’s item today.
