Serbia’s Mir Mi

This drone photo shows the Mir mine, deep in the Siberian tundra. It is one of the largest holes that has ever been excavated and it was the first developed diamond mine of the former Soviet Union. The diamonds were first discovered by a team of Soviet geologists in 1955. Yuri Khabardin, the Chief Geologist, was given the Lenin Prize for the discovery. At its height, 10, 000, 000, 000 carats of diamonds were mined per year.
