Pompeii Was Completely Buried Under Ash

After a 10-mile mushroom cloud of ash and pumice plummeted down Mount Vesuvius, the people of Pompeii fled the city to find shelter. However, around 2,000 locals decided to stay and wait out the eruption. For the next 12 hours, ash and volcanic hail stones up to 3 inches wide showered Pompeii and its people, ultimately burying the city under millions of tons of ash.
