After the eruption, other Roman cities were aware of the destruction but couldn’t find where Pompeii used to be because it was completely buried. It wasn’t until 1748, when a group of explorers looking for ancient artifacts arrived and began to dig and found Pompeii buried under 20 feet of ash.
