When archaeologists first began to dig away at Pompeii, they came across bodies that were encased in layers of hardened volcanic rock and ash. The archaeologists poured plaster into the cavities left by the bodies in the hardened ash, creating plaster casts and allowing us to get face to face with the people of Pompeii in their final moments.
