Slaves Could Work Their Way Up to Freedom
Slaves in Pompeii had the opportunity to work themselves out of servitude. The jobs that the ancient slaves had varied from house maids to doctors. One known account of a man who was enslaved worked as his master’s physician but eventually earned himself freedom and ended up living a life of splendor.
