Anyone who went to school decades ago knew that extreme weather was not a reason for absence. You had to be at school even if there were 22 inches of snow. Even if the air temperature was -33 degrees F with -50 degrees windchill, I had to be there. Now, classes are cancelled with just 8 inches of snow.
