Embarrassment
Steve and Alice knew their kids were embarrassed to be seen with them. It would never matter how much they loved them or how much they did for them if they compared themselves to the parents of other children.
The couple thought that as the kids grew older and more mature, things would change. But it didn’t go like that. Particularly, one tragic incident would show them to be mistaken.
