My mom taught me never to pour boiling water down the drain because it would melt the pipes. I was 27 when my mom got remarried, and her new husband told her how ridiculous that was and that pipes are made to withstand boiling water.
It seemed so obvious after he said that, but I just blindly believed her all these years and never thought to question it.
