The lamp is another cemetery carving that seems to get lost in translation at first. However, the lamp has a wonderful meaning that came from pagans.
It symbolizes knowledge and spiritual immortality. In pagan times, the lamp was seen as a gateway to another world of mystery and other gods. Christianity then adopted its symbolism.
