According to legend, a person fakes being totally bonkers to experience what being locked up in a mental institution is like. But Nellie Bly, an investigative journalist, pretended to be crazy and got herself locked up for real. What she witnessed at the Blackwell Island Asylum was patients living in their own feces and shackled in cages. Eventually, one of Bly’s co-workers at the newspaper rescued her days later.
