Disabled

Thankfully, when the threat of war had disappeared, they disabled most of the rockets. Almost all of the nuclear shelters in Tucson were sealed or destroyed in the early 1980s, when the US relations with the USSR were calming down.
The shelter in John’s backyard was built in 1961, around the time when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened. It is clearly a historical relic, but John had no idea it would become such big news.
