Gary Johnson found a large rock in 1978, which he had taken to his home to study. But experts told him the find was insignificant. 30 years later, the LA Sheriff’s Department’s Search and Rescue Team recovered the fossil. It turns out it was a rare baleen whale fossil approximately 16 million years old.
