Since water became stagnant during long journeys, you can imagine that food would spoil even faster on a ship with no cool temperatures to keep the food edible. They would bring food that wouldn’t rot and cured meats, fermenting veggies to last longer. Sometimes, they even kept animals for milk, eggs and meat on the board of the ship!
