Pirates were cruel and brave, but they followed strict rules on board of their ship. There was a pirate code which Captain Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts’ wrote in 1722. In one of the rules, he established that “the lights and candles [are] to be put out at eight o’clock at night.”

However, crew members could stay awake longer to drink, with one condition: “if any of the crew, after that hour still remained inclined for drinking, they were to do it on the open deck.”
