The “Gentleman Pirate”
We had the Robin Hood of the Sea, but there was also the “Gentleman Pirate,” Stede Bonnet. In 1717 he was only a retired British army major and the owner of a sugar plantation in Barbados. Although he had a wife and children, he decided to ditch them and become a pirate. He bought a ship and sailed out with his crew who saw him as the “Gentleman Pirate.”
