Katherine Switzer Running the Boston Marathon in 1967

In 1967, women still weren’t allowed certain rights. One of those things included running the Boston Marathon. When Katherine Switzer registered, she used the name K.V. Switzer, which didn’t clue officials in that she was, in fact, female. Rather than let her race, marathon workers tried to physically remove her from the race. An official by the name of Jock Semple had to be tackled by Switzer’s boyfriend so that she could finish. And she accomplished it all, despite the fact that her college coaches labelled her a “fragile woman.”
