Buying A Home from A Sears Catalog
Today, buying land and then building a home can be so expensive. People are also restricted by what they can do on their own properties because of all the red tape surrounding home-owners associations and the like. But just one century ago, a person could purchase a home from a catalog, for less than $1500; today, there are doors that cost more than $1500. The homes in the catalog were indeed as shown, but pieces would be shipped to the buyer, along with a blueprint so they could assemble it themselves. Add-ons could also be ordered, and they included everything from kitchen cabinets to light fixtures and wall coverings to garages.
