Schettino claimed he and his crew remained aboard the Concordia, and that the rocks on the Giglio Island’s coast weren’t mapped properly. His attorney, Bruno Leporatti, stated in court that his client was “saddened for the loss of lives and strongly disturbed.” He also stated Schettino saved lives by steering the ship towards shallow water.
