On February 11, 2015, Schettino got a 16-year prison sentence, which he appealed in 2016, but lost. He took the case to Italy’s supreme court, but they upheld the verdict, and on May 12, 2017, Schettino surrendered himself to Rebibbia prison in Rome where he began his sentence.
