In the Urdu language, khaki means “dusty,” which refers to the color of Indian army uniforms in the 19th century when they were under the rule of Britain. The term and the color both gained increased popularity with the British in the late 1800s when they changed their uniforms to be better camouflaged during their military engagements in South Africa.
